One of the popular non vegetarian dish from Maharashtra. Chicken cooked in spicy gravy flavoured with Malwani masala.

4 tbsp Dry Coconut (Shredded)
1 1/2 tsp Sesame seeds (Til)
10 nos. Garlic cloves
1 inch Ginger
1 cup Coriander leaves
3 nos. Onions
4 tsp Kanda-lasun masala
1/2 tsp Malvani masala
4 tsp Kashmiri Red Chilly powder
2 nos. Green Chillies
1/4th tsp Turmeric powder
Salt to taste
3 tbsp Oil
4 cups Water or Chicken stock

Method:

Step 1: In a pressure cooker add washed chicken pieces, turmeric powder, salt and 2 cups water. Pressure cook till 3 whistles.

Step 2: Dry roast coconut and sesame seeds till coconut turns light brown.Keep aside to cool down.

Step 3: In a blender, add above roasted coconut and sesame seeds, garlic cloves, green chillies, ginger and coriander leaves and grind to a fine paste.

Step 4: In a thick bottom pan add oil. When oil gets hot add finely chopped onions and saute till translucent. Now add coconut paste (step 3) and saute for five minutes, keep on stirring continuously.

Add kashmiri red chilly powder, Malvani masala, kanda-lasun masala and mix well. Saute till oil separates from the masala.

Now add chicken stock or water as per required consistency and let the gravy come to a boil. Add chicken pieces and salt (be careful as we had added salt in chicken pieces earlier). Cook covered for 20 minutes on medium flame (stirring occasionally).

Chicken Masala is ready. Serve hot with pav or wade.
